Christoph Markschies, president of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Science and Humanities as well as president of the Union of the German Academies of Science and Humanities, studied Theology, Classics and Philosophy at the Universities of Marurg, Munich, Tübingen, and in Jerusalem, and has obtained his doctoral degree as well as his habilitation at the University of Tübingen. He held positions at the Universities of Jena and Heidelberg and was appointed Professor of Ancient Christianity at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin where he also served as president from 2005-2010. Christoph Markschies is a member of several scientific advisory councils. His research focus is on Ancient Christianity. He holds several honorary doctorates.
